Overview

Universal Context Menu is a macOS utility that allows you to query Claude AI about text selected in any application. This privacy policy explains what data the app accesses, how it's used, and your rights.

Data We Access

Selected Text

  • What: Text you highlight in any application when you invoke the app
  • How: Via macOS Accessibility API or temporary clipboard access
  • Purpose: To provide context for your AI queries
  • Storage: Not stored. Text is held in memory only during your active session and discarded when the context menu closes.

Your Questions

  • What: Questions you type into the app
  • Purpose: Sent to Claude AI along with your selected text to generate responses
  • Storage: Not stored locally beyond the current session

API Key

  • What: Your Anthropic API key
  • How: Stored in macOS Keychain (encrypted, system-managed)
  • Purpose: To authenticate requests to Anthropic's Claude API
  • Storage: Persists in Keychain until you remove it

Clipboard

  • What: Temporary read/write access to system clipboard
  • How: Used as a fallback method to capture selected text when Accessibility API fails
  • Purpose: Text capture only
  • Storage: Original clipboard contents are restored immediately after text capture

Logs

  • What: Technical debugging information (timestamps, error messages, operation status)
  • Where: ~/Library/Logs/UniversalContextMenu/app.log
  • Contents: Does NOT include your selected text, questions, or API responses
  • Purpose: Troubleshooting app issues

Data We Send to Third Parties

Anthropic (Claude AI)

When you submit a query, we send:

  • Your selected text (as context)
  • Your question
  • Your API key (for authentication)

This data is sent directly to Anthropic's API servers. Anthropic's use of this data is governed by their privacy policy.

We do not send data to any other third parties.

Data We Do NOT Collect

  • We do not collect analytics or telemetry
  • We do not track your usage
  • We do not store your queries or AI responses
  • We do not have servers—the app communicates directly with Anthropic
  • We do not access any data beyond what's needed for the current query

Permissions Required

Accessibility Access

Required to read selected text from other applications. You must grant this permission in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.

Keychain Access

Used to securely store your API key using macOS's built-in encryption.

Your Rights

  • Delete API Key: Remove your API key anytime via the app's Settings
  • Revoke Accessibility: Disable in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility
  • Delete Logs: Delete ~/Library/Logs/UniversalContextMenu/ anytime

Data Security

  • API key encrypted via macOS Keychain Services
  • All communication with Anthropic uses HTTPS
  • No data leaves your device except queries sent to Anthropic's API
  • App runs entirely locally with no backend servers

Children's Privacy

This app is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy occasionally. Check the "Last Updated" date above.
